What are Mini Dental Implants?
The Mini Dental Implant System is a miniature titanium implant that acts like the root of your tooth and a retaining fixture that is incorporated into the base of your denture. It is an artificial tooth root made out of Titanium that enables a patient to have the look and feel of natural teeth. The head of the implant is shaped like a ball, and the retaining fixture acts like a socket that contains a rubber O-ring.
The implant is small and appears to a layperson to be a miniature “screw” that is surgically placed into the jawbone – serving as an artificial tooth root – which then supports a restoration such as a crown, bridge, or denture, allowing patients to have the look and feel of natural teeth. It is typically made of titanium which is a material that is well accepted by the body; over time the patient's bone connects to the titanium. There are various system and numerous types of implants with different lengths and diameters that are available. Appropriate implants will be selected by your dentist according to your treatment plan.
Am I a candidate for Dental Implants?
Your dentist will be able to determine if there are any concerns for you to have dental implants placed by conducting an exam in his/her office to check the general condition of your teeth. An x-rays will help them to evaluate and determine whether or not implants are needed. There are several different types of implants and restorations available, your dentist will depend their choice base on the amount of bone available, your general health and restoration preference. Also, your dentist will take considerations of factors like smoking, drinking and existing health conditions, such as diabetes.
